Here's which Buddy to pick from the SSR Buddy Selector Box and the SR Buddy Selector Box in Monster Hunter Outlanders, why each pick is worth it, and how you get the boxes.
Best Pick From the SSR Buddy Selector Box
Pick the Buddy Made for an SSR Adventurer You Own
Most SSR Buddies are tuned for one specific adventurer. If you already own an SSR adventurer, use the box on the Buddy made for them first. The table below shows which Buddy goes with each SSR adventurer.
Tip If you don't have an SSR adventurer yet, it's also fine to keep the box until you get one from recruitment.
Not Sure? Pick Nailu
If you can't decide, Nailu is the one to pick. Its support effect is tuned for Arkaya, but as a Trillan its support skills and Ultimate help any team, so it's worth getting even if you don't own Arkaya.
Tip Bring it on any adventurer with a Support-type Ultimate.
Or Pick One for Your Protagonist's Weapon
You can also choose an SSR Buddy to match your protagonist's gear. The protagonist can freely switch weapon type, element and Ultimate type, so you can pick an element your team is missing and a Buddy that boosts it.
Tip SR Buddies already work well with the protagonist and are more flexible, so there's no rush to spend the SSR box on them.
Daisho Suits the Protagonist
Among SSR Buddies, Daisho is a good partner for the protagonist. Its support effect triggers easily, raising your Dragon damage when you dodge an attack, and it boosts Dragon, an element few monsters resist.
Tip If you'd rather have healing and support than buffs for the protagonist, Nailu is also a good choice.
SSR Buddies You Can Choose
The SSR Buddy Selector Box lets you choose one of 6 Buddies. Pick based on the adventurer each one is made for, or your protagonist's weapon type.
Best Pick From the SR Buddy Selector Box
Except for the protagonist, an adventurer can only bring a Buddy that matches their Ultimate type. These picks are the most flexible Buddies of each type, giving useful buffs to the whole party.
Support: Tidal Sound or Ravinge
For Support, Tidal Sound and Ravinge are both strong in hard content, with several ways to heal and support. Tidal Sound lowers the damage the whole squad takes and can remove status ailments, which helps against troublesome monsters. Ravinge raises the whole squad's elemental damage.
Assault: Tidal Claw
For Assault, pick Tidal Claw. Most Assault Buddies boost damage, but Tidal Claw is a rare one whose support effect always raises the whole squad's part-breaking.
Disruptor: Falee Hendsom or Nako
For Disruptor, Falee Hendsom and Nako both have support effects that work on suppressed monsters. They can suppress monsters on their own, then give your squad bonus damage or better part-breaking against them.
Tip Rutaco Buddies often paralyze or suppress monsters, which doesn't suit every weapon type.
Overall, Get a Support-Type Trillan First
Which Buddies an adventurer can bring depends on their Ultimate type, so prioritize Support-type Trillans, which can buff and heal the whole party. After that, collect an SR Buddy for each Ultimate type.
Tip You get a Trillan's support even when it isn't on the adventurer you're controlling, which makes this type especially flexible.
SR Buddies You Can Choose
The SR Buddy Selector Box lets you choose one of these 15 Buddies.
