The main character, called the Fated Adventurer in game, is the only adventurer who can switch to any weapon type and any type (Assault, Disruptor, or Support). This guide ranks the best weapons for the main character, explains which type to pick, and lists the Insights to take first for each weapon.
Best Weapon Ranking
Heavy Bowgun is the top pick for the main character, followed by Dual Blades, Lance, Bow, and Charge Blade.

| Tier B | Hammer |
Heavy Bowgun (Tier SS)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | The main character can use every ammo type, so they can fight at any range. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Each ammo type plays differently, so you need to learn how to use each one. |
Fight to each ammo type's strengths
Heavy Bowgun adventurers attack by switching between ammo types with different traits. Each adventurer can use different ammo, so learning how to play each type matters. The main character can use every ammo type, so they can fight at any range, from close up to far away.
Go for Perfect Guards
A successful Perfect Guard reloads automatically. Besides blocking damage, it cuts your reload time, which raises your damage. A Perfect Guard can also trigger skill, Insight, and gear effects, so aim for it actively.
Dual Blades (Tier S)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | Great mobility and lots of hits up close, and Demon Mode boosts your attack and speed. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Short reach and no guard, and Demon Mode drains stamina fast, so manage your stamina. |
Short reach, but great mobility and hit count
Dual Blades adventurers excel at mobility and number of hits, built for close range. With short reach and no guard they're hard to play, but if you stick to the monster you can expect high damage.
Power up with Demon Mode
Demon Mode is a power-up unique to Dual Blades. It slowly drains your stamina, but boosts your attack and movement speed and unlocks powerful skills.
Watch your stamina in Demon Mode
Dual Blades adventurers use a lot of stamina in Demon Mode, so always manage your stamina to attack effectively. Running out right when you need to dodge is dangerous, so until you're used to it, turn Demon Mode off often and keep some stamina in reserve.
Tip: taking the Insight Enhanced Stamina greatly reduces stamina use.
Lance (Tier S)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | The best defense in the game: block and counter with Perfect Guard and Charged Counter. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Counters need good timing, which gets harder in parties when the monster's target keeps changing. |
A weapon that blends offense and defense
Lance blocks hits with Charged Counter and Perfect Guard while racking up damage with powerful counters. Its weak point, movement speed, is covered by Dash Attack and its follow-ups, which close the distance.
Timing gets harder in parties
Many Lance follow-ups, like Charged Counter, need to be timed to the monster's attacks. With several adventurers the monster's target spreads out, so your counters can miss their timing or fail to reach.
The best defense
Lance's guard is extremely strong; for withstanding monster attacks it's the best in Outlanders. To attack, though, you need good timing and positioning, so dealing steady damage takes practice.
Bow (Tier S)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | Slide Shot keeps you mobile, and you can hit weak points safely from range. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Charging and dodging use a lot of stamina, so keep some in reserve. |
Attack while dodging with Slide Shot and Perfect Evade
Bow adventurers get high mobility from Skill 1, Slide Shot. Their piercing attack after a Perfect Evade is also strong, so you can attack and defend at the same time.
Hit weak points safely from range
Bow attacks from range, so you can keep your distance and pick off weak points. When the monster leaves an opening, close in with a slide and land a Power Shot for big damage. Adjust your distance to the situation.
Charging and dodging use a lot of stamina
Most Bow actions use stamina, so always manage it to attack effectively. Running out right when you need to dodge is dangerous, so keep some stamina in reserve until you're used to it.
Tip: taking the Insight Martial Harmony greatly reduces stamina use.
Charge Blade (Tier S)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | Switch between a safe sword mode and a high-damage axe mode to balance offense and defense. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Hard to master, but the boosted axe mode is very strong against large monsters. |
Two modes for offense and defense
Charge Blade switches between a safe, positioning-focused sword mode and a high-damage axe mode. It's hard to master, but once you can use it, it balances offense and defense at a high level.
Axe mode is very strong against large monsters
Fill your vials and enter the boosted axe state, and every axe-mode attack gets stronger. With a very wide attack range and high damage, it's extremely strong against large monsters, where it's easy to hit many parts.
Great Sword (Tier A)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | The highest damage of any weapon, and three-stage charges are great for part breaks. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Slow while drawn, with big openings when charging. Weave in evades and the Tackle to stay safe. |
Big charged damage and easy part breaks
Great Sword has the highest damage of any weapon, and overwhelming monsters with huge hits is part of its appeal. Charging through three stages raises damage further, making it great for part breaks.
Steady play takes practice
In exchange for its damage, Great Sword moves and attacks slowly while drawn, and charging leaves big openings, so it takes practice. Weaving evades and the Tackle between moves lets you deal steady damage.
Long Sword (Tier A)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | Spending the spirit gauge unleashes high-damage moves, and some moves take hits without damage and counter. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | Damage depends on the spirit gauge level, so you need to learn how to raise it. |
Spend the spirit gauge for high-damage moves
Long Sword adventurers can use high-damage moves by spending the spirit gauge. Raising the gauge takes effort, but once you're used to it you can keep dealing high damage.
Take hits with hyper armor
Depending on the adventurer, moves like Iai Slash let you take a monster's attack without damage. It works much like a Perfect Evade and can deal counter damage too.
No damage without raising the spirit gauge
Long Sword damage goes up the higher your spirit gauge level, so you need to know how to raise it. Many high-damage moves also spend the gauge, so learn how to build it to deal damage with Long Sword.
Hammer (Tier B)
The footage is from the Japanese version of the game.
| Strengths | High-damage combos to the head can stun and exhaust monsters. |
|---|---|
| Watch out | It needs setup, and you're easy to hit after big moves or while charging. |
High damage that knocks monsters out
Hammer uses several high-damage combos, and as a blunt weapon, slamming the head can stun and exhaust monsters. On the other hand, it's purely about damage compared with cutting weapons that can sever tails.
High damage, but hard to avoid hits
Hammer needs setup to deal its damage, and you're easy to hit after big moves or mid-charge. To land your maximum damage, you need to know the monster's attack range and the weapon's traits well.
Which Type to Choose
| Type | Ultimate | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | Explosive Shot: Spikes | Fires 4 sharp shells from the slinger that spread forward, each piercing for 3 hits. |
| Disruptor | Explosive Shot (flash) | Fires a special shell that explodes in a blinding flash, knocking flying monsters down and dazing them. |
| Support | Explosive Shot (healing) | Fires a medicine pack that bursts into healing smoke, restoring health to adventurers in range over time. |
The type changes the main character's Ultimate. Switch it to fit your party: Ultimates charge in a cycle (Support → Assault → Disruptor → Support…), so avoid a lopsided team such as four Assault adventurers.
The types don't differ much in performance. When you control the main character, Assault makes it easier to deal damage; when they're a teammate, Disruptor or Support is a good choice.

What Makes the Main Character Special
Other adventurers have a fixed weapon type and element, but the main character can use all eight weapon types and switch type freely. The type decides the Ultimate. With the Heavy Bowgun, the main character can also use every kind of ammo. Each weapon has its own detail page with stats and full Insight lists.
