Map and exploration tips
A good spot for your base is the flat land you reach right after coming down from the starting area. Fast travel is free and you can use it anytime, so your base location barely matters. If anything, early on you want water nearby and wide, flat ground that is easy to expand, which gives the land near the starting area a slight edge.
Every Flame Altar you place becomes a fast travel point, but you can only place a limited number. The limit goes up as your world's Flame Level rises, and you raise the Flame Level by offering materials at a placed Flame Altar to strengthen the Flame.
The Flame Level belongs to the whole world. Removing the Flame Altar you used to strengthen the Flame does not lower it, so feel free to remove altars you placed while exploring and build new ones elsewhere.
Interact with a Flame Shrine to collect Spark. Spark is used in large amounts, for strengthening the Flame and much more, so gather it regularly. More becomes available over time, so you can collect it again and again.
A Flame Altar takes 5 of any stone material, not just Stone but also Limestone, Sandstone and more. You can craft it by hand without a Workbench, and place it anywhere with enough flat ground, even inside buildings or on steep mountains.
When you head out to explore, carry a Flame Altar or craft one on the spot, and use it like a save point. Once it is placed, you can fast travel back to that spot later.
Place Flame Altars near gathering spots you visit often and near places you can only reach on foot. An altar on a high spot such as a mountaintop is even better, since you can take off with the Glider right after fast traveling there.
Once unlocked, an Ancient Spire becomes a fast travel point, and you can take off with the Glider from its top. Unlock them whenever you find them. There is no need to place a Flame Altar near an Ancient Spire.
Destroying a Shroud Root grants Skill Points. Only players nearby at that moment receive them, so in multiplayer, destroy roots while your friends are close. Destroyed Shroud Roots come back after a while.
