How to Complete Flame Altar And Base Improvements 2
In the game, this main quest is named Flame Altar And Base Improvements, the same as an earlier quest, so this guide calls it 2. It has two objectives, Expand Your Home and then Build Another Flame Altar.

Expand Your Home
Interact with your Flame Altar, select Upgrade Altar, and upgrade it with a Shroud Core. In our playthrough, the objective changed to Build Another Flame Altar right after the upgrade.

Build Another Flame Altar
Craft a Flame Altar from 5 Stone in the Manual Crafting tab, put it on your action bar and select it, then place it out in the wilds. In our playthrough, the quest was completed right after we placed it.

How to Upgrade the Flame Altar
The Journal says upgrading the Flame Altar increases your protection range and gives you more space to build in, and that the upgrade needs a Shroud Core, which you get by defeating bosses.
Interact with the Flame Altar and select Upgrade Altar. The window shows the next altar level, the new building area and what the upgrade needs:

You can also craft a Shroud Core at the Alchemist from 10 Shroud Spores and 10 Shroud Liquid. The recipe lists a Sheltered Bed as a requirement.
How to Build Another Flame Altar
For this objective, the Journal asks you to build a second Flame Altar in the outer wilds, anywhere you'd like.
Open the Manual Crafting tab and craft a Flame Altar (Level 1 Flame Altar) from 5 Stone.
The item description says to place the Flame Altar above the Shroud to mark your home, and to build inside the marked area around it.
In our playthrough, the crafted altar was in our backpack, so we moved it to the action bar first. Select the Flame Altar in your action bar to start placing it, then confirm with Place. On keyboard and mouse, the prompts showed R for Rotate 90° and X for Use Snapping.
Not every spot worked, though. In our playthrough, some spots showed Not enough free space, and we could not place the altar there. In another play session, we could not place a Flame Altar inside the building area of another Flame Altar.
In our playthrough, QUEST COMPLETED! Flame Altar And Base Improvements appeared right after we placed the second altar, without us interacting with it. In the Journal's World Progress, Bases went from 1 before we placed it to 2 afterwards.
