Investigate The Troubling Rumors
Go to the Hill of Scavengers and defeat the Scavenger Gorger Matron. The Journal's next entry says slaying the Scavenger Matron unlocked the Improved Grappling Hook recipe. In our playthrough, the objective changed to Craft The Improved Grappling Hook as soon as the boss was defeated.

Craft The Improved Grappling Hook
At the Carpenter, craft an Improved Grappling Hook. In our playthrough, QUEST COMPLETED! The Alchemist's Rumors appeared right after we crafted it.

How to Defeat the Scavenger Gorger Matron
The boss's health bar reads SCAVENGER GORGER MATRON. The Journal calls it the Scavenger Matron, and its helmet is named the Scavenger Matron Helmet.
In our playthrough, we shot the boss with a bow from a rock above the camp. It climbed up to us, but we finished it with Explosive Arrow I, and our health did not go down during that fight.

In our playthrough, defeating the boss gave XP +225 and showed RECIPE UNLOCKED! Improved Grappling Hook at Carpenter.
How to Clear the Hill of Scavengers
In our playthrough, we shot an enemy on a raised wooden platform in the camp from a hill with Scrap Arrows and defeated it (Enemy slain XP +45).
In our playthrough, no counter of remaining enemies appeared at any point.
What the Scavenger Gorger Matron Dropped
In our playthrough, the boss left a pile of loot where it fell, holding the Scavenger Matron Helmet, Metal Scraps ×6, Legendary Runes ×8 and a Barbarian Greatsword.

In our playthrough, we used the Scavenger Matron Helmet to make the Flame Altar's flame stronger.
How to Get the Improved Grappling Hook
The Journal says slaying the Scavenger Matron unlocked the recipe, that the improved tool requires less stamina to use, and that it is crafted with the help of the Carpenter.
At the Carpenter, it needs these materials:
| What to know | Detail |
|---|---|
| Shroud Core | 1 |
| Shroud Liquid | 2 |
| Shroud Spores | 3 |
| Grappling Hook | 1 |

The recipe uses a regular Grappling Hook, which is crafted at a Workbench from 4 Metal Scraps, 7 String and 10 Shroud Spores.
