Making a Home walkthrough: how to craft a bed (Crude Mattress) at a Workbench and String by hand, how to cook over a fire, and what kept our food from burning.

How to Complete Making a Home
Making a Home is a main quest with three objectives, shown in this order: Craft Or Obtain A Bed, Cook Something Over A Fire, and Eat The Processed Food.

Craft Or Obtain A Bed
Craft a Crude Mattress at a Workbench. In our playthrough, the objective had already changed to Cook Something Over A Fire by the time we closed the Workbench, and we had not placed the mattress.

Cook Something Over A Fire
Walk up to a fire and, when the Cook prompt appears, press E to sit down. Select raw food in your action bar, then hold the left mouse button and let go to finish cooking.

Eat The Processed Food
Eat the cooked food. In our playthrough, the Grilled Lean Meat was in the Backpack and every action bar slot was in use, and we ate it with Use Item from its menu in the Backpack.

In our playthrough, right after we ate the Grilled Lean Meat, “Maximum health increased.” appeared and the health bar grew. Quest reward XP +150 appeared at the same moment, and QUEST COMPLETED! Making A Home followed.
How to Craft a Bed
The bed we crafted for this quest is the Crude Mattress, made at a Workbench. One craft makes one Crude Mattress.

Crafting the Crude Mattress also unlocked the Crude Wooden Bed recipe at the Workbench.
Plant Fiber can be harvested from plants out in the open world. In our play sessions, we could find Torn Cloth and Plant Fiber easily while exploring.
How to Craft String
Craft String in Manual Crafting, where one String takes 3 Plant Fiber. The Manual Crafting tab also appears in the Workbench menu, next to the Workbench tab.
In other play sessions, we rarely found String in crates.
How to Cook Without Burning Food
Walk up to a fire and press E when the Cook prompt appears; your character sits down at the fire. In our playthrough, this tutorial appeared next: “Place food in your action bar, select it, and press [LMB] to cook.”
While seated at the fire, select raw food in your action bar. Hold to cook appears, and while you hold the left mouse button, the prompt changes to Release to finish.

In the playthrough we recorded, we held the button for about 7 seconds, and letting go gave us Grilled Lean Meat. In another play session, we let go once the food started sizzling and turned light brown, and it did not burn.
