How to complete the Finding and Using a Gem Forge quest? Reach the Gem Forge east of the Ancient Spire, go through the Shroud Lair and defeat the Fell Banshee.

How to Complete Finding and Using a Gem Forge
Finding and Using a Gem Forge is a main quest. The Journal says the Alchemist discovered that the Ancients once used gemstones as a power source, and that you first need to know where a Gem Forge is. In our playthrough, the objectives shown were Find The Gem Forge, Clear And Investigate The Gem Forge, Find Out Where The Intruders Came From, Explore The Shroud Lair and Defeat And Loot The Fell Banshee.

Find the Gem Forge
Fast travel to the Ancient Spire (Springlands), glide east and walk on to the quest marker. Go down the cliff into the Shroud and enter the cave where the Gem Forge is.

Clear and Investigate the Gem Forge
Defeat the enemies at the Gem Forge and use the Gem Forge. If the objective does not change, loot the bodies of the enemies you defeated.

Find Out Where the Intruders Came From
Follow the quest marker down the hill and along the magma to the Shroud Lair.

Explore the Shroud Lair
Check your Shroud time before going in and restore it at the pink light at the entrance if it is low. In our playthrough, we crossed the magma with the grappling hook. Then blast the glowing blockages inside with Explosive Powder Balls.

Defeat and Loot the Fell Banshee
Defeat the Fell Banshee in the inner chamber and loot it to get the Gem of Bleeding.
In our playthrough, we had inserted a gem at the Gem Forge before going to the Shroud Lair. After we looted the Fell Banshee, the tracker switched to Follow The Melody (see How the Quest Ended).

Where Is the Gem Forge?
On the map, the quest marker is far to the east of the Ancient Spire (Springlands), almost due east. A Flame Shrine marker is just west of it.
The Gem Forge is in a cave inside the Shroud, and enemies guard it. When you go into the cave, LOCATION REACHED and the place name GEM FORGE appear, and the objective changes to Clear And Investigate The Gem Forge.
How to Reach the Gem Forge
In our playthrough, we fast traveled to the Ancient Spire (Springlands), jumped off the top to the east and glided, then walked the rest of the way. After landing, the walk to the Gem Forge was long.
What Is a Gem Forge?
At the Gem Forge, you insert gems into weapons. Press E Forge Weapon Gems to open the SELECT ITEM screen, where you choose a gem or a weapon. The bottom left shows SPRINGLANDS, Gem Forge and Max Gem Level: 10.
Selecting a gem shows Upgrade, Insert and Recycle. In our playthrough, selecting a weapon without a gem showed Insert, and selecting the weapon after we inserted a gem showed Upgrade and Extract.
In our playthrough, inserting our gem into a weapon cost 50 Archaic Essence I, and the cost line listed Springlands Shroud Lairs as where to get it. Recycling our Level 9 Gem of Puncturing gave us 59 Archaic Essence I.
In our playthrough, the Shroud timer stayed at 7:00 while we were using the Gem Forge.
What to Do If the Quest Does Not Progress
If the objective stays at Clear And Investigate The Gem Forge after you defeat the enemies and use the Gem Forge, loot the bodies of the enemies you defeated. In our playthrough, inserting a gem did not change the objective, and it changed to Find Out Where The Intruders Came From right after we took the loot from a body.
Where Is the Shroud Lair?
Follow the quest marker down the hill and along the magma. When you arrive, the place name SHROUD LAIR appears and the objective changes to Explore The Shroud Lair.
Check your remaining Shroud time before you go in. At the entrance, use the pink light with E Restore Time in the Shroud to restore your Shroud time, or leave the Shroud to refill it.
How to Get Through the Shroud Lair
In our playthrough, we used the grappling hook on a glowing anchor past the pink light to cross the magma into the Shroud Lair.
Inside, blast each glowing blockage with an Explosive Powder Ball to open the way. In our playthrough, we blasted 3 blockages and used 3 Explosive Powder Balls before reaching the Fell Banshee.
Pick up the glowing bulbs as you go to get Archaic Essence I.
Before you leave, go to the anchor on the right side of the chamber and climb up with the Improved Grappling Hook. In our playthrough, the golden chest on the ledge above held Voidcaller (a wand) and Half-Light Halos (daggers).
How to Defeat the Fell Banshee
In the inner chamber, the objective changes to Defeat And Loot The Fell Banshee. Defeat it and loot it to get the Gem of Bleeding (SPECIAL ITEM ACQUIRED!). In our playthrough, we also picked up Legendary Runes and Aerated Banshee Gel.
How the Quest Ended
In our playthrough, we had inserted a gem at the Gem Forge before we went to the Shroud Lair. QUEST COMPLETED! appeared right after we used the grappling hook to cross the magma into the Shroud Lair, but the objective stayed at Explore The Shroud Lair. After we looted the Fell Banshee, the tracker switched to Follow The Melody, so the screen no longer showed this quest's objectives. We never saw a Use The Gem Forge objective, and the Journal later showed 4 main quests instead of 5.
