There are four survival systems: Satiety (hunger), heat and cold, healing, and fainting. Hunger never drains your HP, Overheat stops draining HP once you reach 70, Cold lowers your max stamina, and most quests fail on your 3rd faint.
The 4 Survival Systems at a Glance
Monster Hunter Outlanders has four survival systems: Hunger (Satiety), Heat and Cold, Healing, and Fainting. They affect how well your character survives while exploring.
| Survival system | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hunger (Satiety) | Eat food to keep Satiety up. It lets your HP slowly regenerate when you are not hunting. |
| Heat and Cold | Extreme temperatures cause Overheat or Cold. Temperature depends on the area, weather and time of day. |
| Healing | Restore HP with Potions, Buddy healing and Vigorwasps. |
| Fainting | Running out of HP in a hunt sends you back to the nearest Camp, and each quest only allows a limited number of returns. |
Hunger (Satiety) and What Low Satiety Does
You become hungry when your Satiety falls below 40. Being hungry does not drain your HP or lower your stamina, so you do not need to eat right away.
Check your Satiety with the icon to the left of your HP bar. How full the icon is shows how hungry your character is.

Satiety does not go down while you are in a safe area. In hunting areas that are not safe, such as Free Hunt, it goes down over time.
The main downside of low Satiety is that your HP no longer regenerates outside of hunts. Unlike heat and cold, hunger does not directly weaken your character or make you collapse, and you can keep acting even at 0 Satiety.
Below 20 Satiety you enter the Starving state, and the edges of the screen go dark. Keep Satiety above 20 if the darker screen gets in your way while hunting.

How to Restore Satiety
Eat a meal at your base or at the village canteen to restore Satiety. Meals also give bonuses such as higher health and stamina.
Once you unlock Field Cooking in the Survival tab of Research, you can eat takeout meals in the Free Hunt Squad Lobby. In the field, you can also order a meal from Edit Squad in the Menu.
Well-Done Steak is a portable consumable that refills Satiety from 0 to 100.

After you unlock the BBQ Spit in the Build tab of Research, you can craft one, place it in the field and cook Raw Meat into Well-Done Steak. If you hunt in the field often, this lets you restore Satiety without going back to your base.
Well-Done Steak only restores Satiety. Unlike some food items, it does not raise your max stamina.
Overheat and Cold: What They Do
Overheat and Cold are negative status effects you get from extreme temperatures. Temperature changes with the area, the weather and the time of day, and the current temperature appears at the lower right of the minimap.

| Status effect | Effect |
|---|---|
| Overheat | Staying in a hot environment drains your HP over time until it reaches 70. After that it stops, even if you stay in the heat. |
| Cold | Staying in a cold environment sharply lowers your max stamina, which makes monster attacks harder to dodge. |
Open the map and hover over an area to see its temperature, weather and time of day. You can change them for 200 Research Points. For example, switching Searing Plains to Dawn or Night lowers the temperature and makes it easier to explore.

How to Protect Yourself from Overheat and Cold
An Advanced Undergarment, crafted from Craft/Tools: Survival, cancels the effects of extreme temperatures and adds a bonus in hot or cold environments.
| Undergarment | Effect and materials |
|---|---|
| Advanced Heat-Resistant Undergarment | Cancels the effects of hot environments, and keeps a small part of the red health bar when you take damage in the heat. Materials: 1 Jyuratodus Shell II and 1 Machalite Ore. |
| Advanced Cold-Resistant Undergarment | Cancels the effects of cold environments, and raises your max stamina in the cold. Materials: 1 Anjanath Pelt II and 1 Machalite Ore. |
The regular Undergarments have no extra effect, but their materials are easy to get, so they are a practical backup. You unlock the first one early in Chapter 2, Overlord of the Mud, after you defeat Jyuratodus.
| Undergarment | Effect and materials |
|---|---|
| Heat-Resistant Undergarment | Cancels the effects of hot environments. Materials: 1 Jyuratodus Shell I and 1 Iron Ore. |
| Cold-Resistant Undergarment | Cancels the effects of cold environments. Materials: 1 Anjanath Pelt I and 1 Iron Ore. |
Hot Drinks and Cool Drinks cancel the effects of extreme temperatures for 15 minutes. Each takes a single material: Cool Drinks use Chillshrooms and Hot Drinks use Hot Peppers.
The area around each fast-travel campsite stays at a Pleasant temperature whatever the region's weather. Once you leave it, you can be exposed to heat or cold again.

How to Restore HP
Use a Potion to restore HP. The HP comes back gradually while the item is being used, so interrupting the animation means you recover less.
Raising the Quick-Bite skill on your equipment (Lv. 1 to 3) speeds up eating meat and using items like Potions and Antidotes.

Some Buddies restore Adventurers' HP with their Skills and Ultimates. Madelyn's Buddies heal the party while also granting buffs.
Vigorwasps are Endemic Life in hunting areas that restore HP. Their healing only reaches Adventurers within a certain range, so gather your party nearby before you use one.
How to Craft or Buy Healing Items
You can craft healing items. Turn on Auto-Craft and your stock refills automatically as you gather the materials in the field.
You can also buy healing items such as Potions and Mega Potions from the Supply Manager for Zenny.

What Happens When You Faint
If your HP runs out during a hunt, you faint and are sent back to the nearest Camp. Each quest limits how many times you can be sent back, and going over the limit fails the quest. If you faint while exploring the map, you are sent to the nearest fast-travel point instead.
Most quests fail on your 3rd faint, so you can only faint 2 times. The quest conditions show this as <3.

Fainting during a hunt, such as in a burrow, does not reduce the number of rewards as long as you complete the quest.

Fainting Penalties and What Carries Over
| What | After you faint |
|---|---|
| Quest timer | Keeps counting down while you return to Camp and walk back to the monster, which raises the risk of running out of time. |
| Hot Drink and Cool Drink buffs | Removed when you faint. Drink another one after you get back up. |
| Food effects | Stay active, including higher max HP and max stamina. In a quest they last until the quest ends. |
When one of your Adventurer squadmates goes down, their icon darkens and shows an X. They cannot fight or use their Ultimate until revived. In a quest, a downed squadmate comes back when your own Adventurer runs out of HP and returns to Camp.
