About this specialization

Raise the supplied Rat stock in the Animal Cage and sell the meat to Food buyers such as Expedition Supplier and Security Requisition Officer. Sell smaller cuts while breeding your herd, then use automation and better parents to increase output. Once feed and cash are secure, consider tilapia or Sturgeon as a second livestock line; bought goods, finds from the Dumping Ground and appraisal fees can fill gaps in meat sales. Traps add rats to the same meat business, while spare fruit and selling a one-off gift provide extra cash.

Rats eat the calories stored in the Livestock Feed Dispenser; keep young males and females as parents and butcher the surplus. A healthy 400 g rat yields one unit of Raw Meat (Standard), with a base value of 159. Lighter rats give smaller cuts, so judge them by their actual weight. Meat and fish fillets without Trash Grade sell as Food; Raw Meat (Standard) and Caviar also count as Luxury Items. For fish other than Gutter Tilapia, more than 25% of absorbed calories from the Gutterflow Pellet makes fillets and egg jars Trash Grade, removing their Food category. Meat and fish products that retain Food classification share many buyers. Check both feed reserves and unsold stock before expanding, and keep the rent money aside.

Ratings

Beginner friendliness3 / 5
The cage, Livestock Feed Dispenser and rats are supplied, but every day you must check hunger, disease and filth, and decide yourself which rats to breed and when to butcher.
Early income3 / 5
The supplied rats can give meat from the start, but it takes days for their young to grow before you can sell meat every day.
Growth before the buyout4 / 5
An Auto Butcher, larger cages and fast-growing parents raise meat output; to sell it all, add buyers such as the Upper Level Private Chef the Display Case brings from day 14 and the normal customer Store Renovation II adds.
Low daily effort2 / 5
Check feed reserves, filth, disease and meat output, and refill, clean, mark new breeders and collect meat when needed. A Cleaner Robot and an Auto Butcher take over part of the work.
Safety from Security and factions5 / 5
Meat is a legal food, and this start lowers no faction reputation. The risk is losing rats to disease or crowding, not inspections.
Starting cash margin5 / 5
You start with 600 cash, the most of any profession, against 200 rent, and the cage, Livestock Feed Dispenser and 6 rats are supplied.

Compare ways to earn

Breed the supplied Rat stock and sell Raw Meat (Standard)

From the start

Keep breeding males and females in the supplied Animal Cage, feed them through the Livestock Feed Dispenser, and butcher surplus rats with the Meat Cleaver. Healthy rats of at least 400 g give Raw Meat (Standard); smaller cuts can also be sold. Sell to the Expedition Supplier through the Display Case, the Security Requisition Officer on Thursdays and Merchant before the rent. Keep feed and cage space ready for the next litter.

  1. Put the supplied rats inside the Animal Cage. Open the Livestock Feed Dispenser attached to it, put food in "Container" and press "Start". The food is stored as calories, and the rats eat from it at night.

  2. Every day, hover over each rat and check its age and weight, and whether it shows "Diseased", "Starving" or "Immunocompromised".

    • A Diseased rat loses a quarter of its Max Health every night and recovers more often the higher its Immunity; butchering it gives meat for only 75% of its weight. Use the Livestock Immunity Serum (2 uses at the start) on your breeders: each dose raises Immunity for 4 nights but also makes them hungrier.
    • Once droppings and carcasses cover a fair part of the cage's cells, filth adds a chance of disease. Low Immunity can also cause disease in a clean cage. Remove droppings every day and take out carcasses at once.
    • When rats fill more than 55% of the cage's cells, Fertility drops; above 70%, heavier rats may kill lighter ones.
  3. Mark the young male and female you will breed with the Marking Pen (or name them with the Blue Labeler).

    • A mark or a name protects breeders from the Auto Butcher's automatic cage selection.
    • Starving, Pregnant and Neutered rats do not mate. Each mating succeeds at the lower Fertility of the two parents, and hunger, old age, disease and crowding all lower Fertility.
  4. Keep your breeding pair and butcher surplus rats with the Meat Cleaver. Choose healthy rats of at least 400 g when you want standard cuts.

    • A healthy rat gives one unit of Raw Meat (Standard) per 400 g, then smaller cuts from the remainder. Below 400 g you get smaller cuts only; check the rat's actual weight.
    • Take the meat away from the rats so they cannot eat it; eating rat meat can cause Prion Disease.
    • The supplied rats usually die of old age on the night they turn 14 days old (a higher "Longevity" pushes this back), so butcher them by the day they are 13 days old.
  5. Put Raw Meat (Standard) in the Display Case. At normal market value, displaying just one brings the Expedition Supplier; from day 14, three or more bring the Upper Level Private Chef. Market changes can change how many pieces you need.

    • Display Case customers come in addition to normal customers. None come while attractiveness is under 100, or on day 1 unless you skipped the intro.
    • While you display only meat, the Display Case draws at most one customer a day; extra customer slots stay empty unless you also display another category.
  6. Sell meat to the Security Requisition Officer on Thursdays from day 8 (first on day 11), and to Merchant on rent days.

    • The Security Requisition Officer comes while your Security reputation is 0 or higher and buys food with a base budget of 300. Its base trade reputation multiplier is 2. When the buyer can pay the full price, a markup accepted in bargaining lowers reputation instead; offering a discount increases the multiplier.
    • Merchant buys food before the rent, at a difficulty-dependent discount and without the normal retail markup. You can still bargain over the price.
    • The Landlord collects rent every 7 days from day 7. Keep the rent aside before buying feed or equipment.

Tips

  • Cage space and disease cap your numbers. Clear droppings before you let the rats multiply, and when a rat dies, butcher it with the Meat Cleaver at once: a carcass still gives meat based on its weight (75% if it is still Diseased), and left in the cage it adds to the filth.
  • While your only buyers are the Expedition Supplier, the Thursday Security Requisition Officer and Merchant, do not breed more rats than you can sell.
  • Do not use the Livestock Steroid Serum while disease is around: for 4 nights it speeds growth but lowers Immunity.

Automate meat production with an Auto Butcher and a larger Animal Cage

From mid gamePrevious stage: Breed the supplied Rat stock and sell Raw Meat (Standard)

Buy an Auto Butcher from the Retired Rat Rancher on a Friday, mark the breeders you want to keep and set it to harvest by weight. Use the Metal Ingot to enlarge the Animal Cage when it gets crowded. If meat starts to pile up, expand sales to the Upper Level Private Chef, the Security Requisition Officer, Merchant and normal customers who buy Food before adding more rats.

  1. Buy an Auto Butcher from the Retired Rat Rancher, who comes on Fridays (first on day 5), and install it on the Animal Cage.

  2. On the Auto Butcher's "Cage" page, set "Harvest" to "Weight" and the lower limit to 400 g for standard cuts. Mark your breeders with the Marking Pen.

    • Do not leave "Harvest" set to "Off" when you want automatic butchering.
    • Check how many males and females "Keep breeders" reserves, and put a mark on the parents you want to keep.
    • Check "Spare pregnant", "Cull sick" and "Cull prion carriers" before starting. Diseased rats yield meat for only 75% of their weight.
  3. Every morning, take the meat out of the Auto Butcher's "Output".

    • Collect the meat to leave room in "Output" for the next batch.
  4. Put a Cleaner Robot in the Animal Cage so it collects droppings at night.

  5. Get a Furnace from Dr. Jackson, make the Metal Ingot from two units of Scrap Metal, and use it on the Animal Cage to add one row (up to 8 rows).

    • If you play the intro, Dr. Jackson comes on day 6 and sells a Furnace at the new-customer discount, with an Energy Cell. After meeting Dr. Jackson (or from the start if you skipped the intro), the night shop always stocks a Furnace on nights other than Monday while you own none. It needs energy and takes one night.
    • Scrap Metal: if you play the intro, the Junker sells 3 on day 2, Scavenger sells 5 on day 5, and the Poor Scav trades 3 for any one food item on day 6. Later, the Junker (3–4 per visit) and the Poor Scav come as normal customers.
    • Scrap Metal also repairs the Animal Cage. Below 20 Durability, rats start to escape.
  6. From day 14 (day 2 if you skipped the intro), random normal customers come too; sell meat to the ones who buy food, such as the Food Bank Supplier.

  7. From day 14, at normal market value keep three or more units of Raw Meat (Standard) in the Display Case to bring the Upper Level Private Chef. Raise attractiveness with Store Renovation I and Store Renovation II for bigger budgets and one more normal customer.

    • With a clean store, Store Renovation I reaches 400 attractiveness (budgets +10%), and Store Renovation II reaches 550 (budgets +25%, and one more normal customer from 500).
    • A dirty store loses attractiveness and can drop below these thresholds.

  • Store Renovation II

Takes a clean store to 550 attractiveness, adding a normal customer and raising budgets by 25%.

  • Joe Wild

If you play the intro, he comes on day 7, opens Wild's Network and gives your first Wild's favor (none on Red Ink); if you skip it, Wild's Network is open from the start with no Wild's favor. Store Renovation I and other upgrades are bought there.

  • Poor Scav

Trades 3× Scrap Metal for any one food item; comes on day 6 if you play the intro, and later as a normal customer.

  • Upper Level Private Chef

A customer with a large budget who comes to buy food from day 14 when the Display Case holds three or more units of Raw Meat (Standard) at normal market value.

  • Food Bank Supplier

Comes as a normal customer from day 14 (day 2 if you skipped the intro) and buys food.

  • Upper Level Visitor

Can come as a normal customer from day 14 (day 2 if you skipped the intro). When visiting to buy Luxury Items, this customer accepts Raw Meat (Standard); a visit to buy Substances does not accept it.

  • John Smith

Spare him and he comes every week to buy food, with a budget that grows over time.

  • Cadet Serpico

On days 48–50, after receiving his letter and if you have not reported him, leave 2000 kcal or more of food at the Dumping Ground; two units of Raw Meat (Standard) are enough. You cannot go there with Maimed.

Tips

  • If meat is left unsold, add outlets before buying a second Animal Cage. Store Renovation II and 20 Lower Levels reputation each add a normal customer slot, but the extra normal customer will not always buy Food.
  • Mark the rats you will use as the next parents with the Marking Pen before they reach 400 g.

Breed from fast-growing Rat stock to make Raw Meat (Standard) sooner

Late gamePrevious stage: Automate meat production with an Auto Butcher and a larger Animal Cage

Compare each Rat that the Retired Rat Rancher sells on Fridays and choose fast-growing males and females as parents. Use the Gene Scanner to select their young, keeping only as many candidates as you can feed and house. Sell the resulting meat to the Upper Level Private Chef, the Security Requisition Officer and normal customers who buy Food; better breeding stock does not remove the need for buyers.

  1. On Fridays, compare the "Growth Rate" and "Expected Litter Size" of each Rat the Retired Rat Rancher sells.

    • The four higher-priced rat offers each appear only sometimes. Compare the actual traits before buying, including those of the two normally priced rats.
  2. Buy the male and female you want and mark them with the Marking Pen as parents.

    • For each trait, a pup inherits one gene copy from each parent; each copy occasionally mutates. Temporary serum bonuses are not inherited.
  3. Turn on the Gene Scanner, examine the pups' inherited traits and mark those you want as the next parents.

  4. Set "Harvest" on the Auto Butcher to "Weight" with a 400 g lower limit, and protect your parents with names, marks or "Keep breeders". "Spare pregnant" protects pregnant rats only when enabled; for rats without a name or mark, enabled sick or prion culling runs before pregnancy protection and the weight selection.

  5. Replace aging parents with young rats as their Fertility declines. Butcher the old parents with the Meat Cleaver before they die of old age.

    • The "Elder" label shows from 11 days old whatever the "Longevity".

Tips

  • With other conditions equal, a higher Growth Rate increases weight gain while young and can bring a rat to 400 g sooner. Keep enough feed and cage space for the young you select.
  • Whether good rats are on sale changes every week, so buy them in the weeks they show up.

Wild's Favorite makes Wild's Network upgrades such as Store Renovation I and Store Renovation II 10% cheaper.

Lower Levels

Poor Reviews

Required reputation−20 or less
In-game effect
100% chance that 1 less random customer will visit your Store per day.
What to watch
At -20 Lower Levels reputation or lower, the daily normal customer quota decreases by one, without falling below zero. When the customer can pay the full price, a markup accepted in bargaining lowers that faction's reputation, and so does a demand that makes the customer leave, so do not push the Lower Levels customers who buy your food too hard.
Upper Levels

Tourist Trap

Required reputation−40 or less
In-game effect
Customers from the Upper Levels are less likely to visit your Store.
What to watch
At -40 Upper Levels reputation or lower, Upper Levels customers come less often, so meat buyers such as the Upper Level Visitor drop off.

How to raise reputation

Values are before adjustments. Gains are multiplied by 1.5 on Price Gouge, 1 on Mark Up, 0.75 on Thin Margins and 0.5 on Red Ink; losses by 0.5, 1, 1.25 and 2.

Security

  • Trading with Security customers adds about 2.5 for every 1000 credits sold or bought, and trades with the Security Requisition Officer count double.
  • A clean inspection adds 3.
  • Correctly reporting a wanted customer adds 5, or 1.5 times as much with Model Citizen.
  • Reporting a seller of stolen goods or serious contraband who is not wanted adds 0 to 4, depending on the contraband level, but lowers the seller's faction.
  • Correctly shooting an augmented person adds 8. A wrong shot costs 15.
  • An Alarm System with a transmitter for Security adds 1 on each night the Insurance Service is checked.
  • Completing a Security request from Marketplace Requests adds up to 10.
  • Model Citizen starts you 30 higher and Well Connected 15 higher, without difficulty adjustments.

Main causes of loss

It drops by up to 25 when an inspection finds contraband or stolen goods, and by 10 when you pay a fine.

Upper Levels

  • Trading with Upper Levels customers adds about 3 for every 1000 credits.
  • An active Alarm System with a transmitter for the Upper Levels adds 1 on each night the Insurance Service is checked.
  • Completing an Upper Levels request from Marketplace Requests adds up to 5.
  • Sycophant starts you 15 higher and increases gains by 25%; Well Connected starts you 15 higher. These starting increases receive no difficulty adjustments.

Main causes of loss

Reporting this faction's customers usually costs 6 or more, and a failed haggle that makes the customer leave costs 3.

Lower Levels

  • Trading with Lower Levels customers adds about 1.65 for every 1000 credits. Most normal customers belong to this faction, so everyday sales raise it.
  • Completing a Lower Levels request from Marketplace Requests adds up to 10, and the larger requests give 6 to 10.
  • Handing out free medicine you were given without charging adds 1 per item, and selling it costs 4.
  • Reporting The Butcher adds 6 instead of lowering it.
  • Well Connected starts you 15 higher.

Main causes of loss

Reporting its members costs 6 or more, and a failed haggle that makes the customer leave costs 3.
