About this specialization

Breed Tilapia or raise Gutter Tilapia on the Gutterflow Pellet, then harvest fillets for Food buyers. While fry grow, supplement cash by selling scavenged stock or reselling bought Food. Once water and power are stable, add Graft Tilapia for Medical buyers or large fish for the Eel Fillet and Caviar. Spare unfertilized roe and appraisal fees add further income.

Fish in a Recirculating Aquaculture System need water, power and feed every night. If the water falls below half their combined requirement, all fish in that tank die. The Hunger gauge measures stored feed: 0% is empty. A fertilized roe of a breeding species hatches into six fry; protect a male and female to replenish stock. Fillets and unfertilized roe sell as Food; Graft Tilapia also supplies a Tilapia Skin Graft and unfertilized Graft Tilapia Roe for Medical buyers. Large fish need meat and do not breed. Get feed and fertilized roe from the Retired Aquafarmer on Tuesdays. Display Case buyers depend on the categories selected, their value and store attractiveness; the Security Requisition Officer also buys Food and Medical goods every Thursday from day 11 if Security reputation is at least 0. The table uses base values without deducting costs; growth days are not calendar days.

Ratings

Beginner friendliness2 / 5
You check water, power, feed and organic waste every day, and a single night with less than half the water its fish need kills every fish in that tank.
Early income2 / 5
At the start you own only the breeding pair and one fertilized roe, and the fry need days to grow before they are worth filleting.
Growth before the buyout4 / 5
Breeding pairs multiply the stock, each extra Recirculating Aquaculture System adds another 12000 ml tank, and Aquaculture II adds the Eel Fillet and Caviar to sell.
Low daily effort1 / 5
Even with the Livestock Feed Dispenser and the Auto Butcher, you keep the power running, replace worn units of Water Filter, move growing fish between tanks and empty the tray of the Auto Butcher every day.
Safety from Security and factions5 / 5
Neither the fish you raise nor the fillets and roe you sell are contraband, and the start does not change any faction reputation.
Starting cash margin2 / 5
Before starting-perk adjustments you have 150 credits and 240 rent; the first payment is due on day 7 before your first fry are grown, and the Water Filter and feed are a recurring cost.

Raise Tilapia and sell the fillets

From the start

Breed the starting Tilapia and sell fillets to Display Case Food buyers and the Security Requisition Officer. A RAS Water Tank holds 12000 ml, enough water for 16 adults, but fish and feed also need free grid space. Buy bagged feed from the Retired Aquafarmer on Tuesdays.

  1. Day 1: pour both units of Jug of Water (6000 ml of Ghostwater each) into the RAS Water Tank of one Recirculating Aquaculture System to fill it to 12000 ml. Put in the male and female Tilapia, the fertilized Tilapia Roe and one bag of Industrial Fish Feed, then use your Electronic Parts (Common) on that Recirculating Aquaculture System to cut its power use from 5 to 3.

    • Keep feed available. Hungry fish can eat live fish or eggs weighing at most 20% of their own weight; keep eggs and fry apart from larger fish.
    • Leave the second Recirculating Aquaculture System empty until you can fill it with water.
    • Fish and fry left outside a tank die at night.
  2. Every Tuesday from day 2, buy from the Retired Aquafarmer: a Water Filter for a filter slot of the Recirculating Aquaculture System, both bags of Industrial Fish Feed and fertilized Tilapia Roe (2 are on sale each visit).

  3. Set up power before the starting Energy Cell runs out: at power use 3, its charge of 50 lasts 16 nights (a full one holds 100). Buy a Current Converter from Dr. Jackson (at the night shop, or at your store every Friday from day 12) and put it in the battery slot of the Recirculating Aquaculture System, or place a PowerBloc next to the Recirculating Aquaculture System to recharge its battery.

  4. Breed: an adult female at 50% fullness or more occasionally lays roe overnight, and an adult male of the same species, also at 50% fullness or more, fertilizes it on a later night. Each unit of fertilized Tilapia Roe hatches into a group of 6× Tilapia Fry.

    • A unit of fertilized Tilapia Roe hatches on its first night in the tank. Leave space for each young fish that grows from the fry; young fish that cannot fit are lost.
    • Mark the breeding pair with the Marking Pen: the Auto Butcher never cuts a fish with a mark or a name.
    • Each fish needs more water as it grows: 350 ml at the Adolescent stage, 750 ml as an Adult and 1000 ml as an Elder. When the tank shows 'Low Water', the fish lose health, so move the extra fish to another tank.
  5. Use the Kitchen Knife on a live fish to kill it, then again to fillet it. For automatic harvesting, fit an Auto Butcher to the Recirculating Aquaculture System, select Weight under Harvest, and check the weight range against the fish you want to harvest. Mark breeders first.

    • Tilapia reaches the Elder stage at 13 growth days, with a target weight of 600 g. Check its actual weight before harvesting. Feed shortages and a high share of Industrial Fish Feed make those growth days take more calendar nights.
    • From 27 growth days a Tilapia shows 'Old age: may die any night', and each growth day after that it often does, so harvest it before then.
    • Cuts are taken largest first (Large Fish Fillet, then Fish Fillet, Small Fish Fillet and Tiny Fish Fillet), so the more a fish has eaten, the more fillets it gives; a remainder of 25 kcal or more becomes one Fish Scrap.
    • Empty the Auto Butcher tray every day to leave room for products. Keep sale fillets out of the tank so hungry fish cannot eat them.
    • Protect the breeding male and female with marks, and check the 'Keep breeders' settings before automatic harvesting.
  6. Put fillets in the Display Case before opening. Display Case customers are blocked on day 1 without skipping the intro, or below 100 store attractiveness. When Food is selected among the categories that draw buyers, a high enough total Food value brings the Expedition Supplier; from day 14, a much higher total brings the Upper Level Private Chef instead.

    • The total adds up the value of all food in the Display Case before your retail markup.
    • When selected Food has a low total, it draws the Spacer, the Hungry Spacer or the Spacer Cook. At store attractiveness of at least 400, that selected category draws the Expedition Supplier even with a low total.
    • The Display Case draws at most one buyer per major type of goods in it, so extra visitor slots do not add buyers if you display only fillets of the same type.
  7. Every Thursday from day 11, sell fillets to the Security Requisition Officer, who buys food and medical goods with a base budget of 300 before reputation and Store Attractiveness bonuses.

    • This buyer comes only while your Security reputation is 0 or more. The base trade reputation multiplier is 2; bargaining can change it.
    • On day 13 Foodie Tourist only greets you, then comes back 2 days later to buy food and drinks with a base budget of 750 before bonuses, taking each kind of item only once, so keep several kinds ready, such as Large Fish Fillet, Fish Fillet, Small Fish Fillet and unfertilized Tilapia Roe. This visit does not happen if you chose 'Skip Intro'.
    • If you let John Smith go when this wanted customer comes to buy food, the visits repeat every 7 days, with a budget that grows with the day count.
  8. Days 46 to 57: on day 46, let Cadet Serpico leave and hide instead of reporting him. On day 48 Georgio brings a letter from him asking for food; by day 50, leave food worth 2000 kcal at the Dumping Ground, such as 5× Fish Fillet.

    • The food is counted when you leave the Dumping Ground, including food inside containers, and it adds up over several visits. Maimed bars the Dumping Ground, so you cannot deliver it with that perk.
    • On day 54 he asks who should get the evidence he has gathered: recommend the Revolution, the Black Market or Security (the last needs Security reputation 50 or more); choosing no one gives no reward. On day 57 you can pick 2× Current Converter (Shabby) as the reward, and the faction you recommended gains 12 reputation before adjustments.
    • Reporting him on day 46 pays a bounty of 300 before adjustments, but his story ends there. None of these visits happen in 'Endless Mode'.

Related Wild's Network upgrades

  • Power Line Hijack

Keeps your store out of blackouts and makes the Power Service free, so the Current Converter and the PowerBloc power the tanks on blackout nights too.

  • Store Renovation I

Raises base store attractiveness to 400. When Food is selected in the Display Case, the Expedition Supplier can come even at a low Food total if actual attractiveness is still at least 400.

  • Buyer Referral Service

As a nightly service, it selects a buyer for the most numerous category in your main inventory, excluding documents, if one can be matched. If it selects the food buyer already called by the Display Case, the two are merged, so another outlet for fillets is not guaranteed. When the store is not vandalized, it also lets the Display Case draw from one more category; display enough different categories.

Tips

Raise Gutter Tilapia on Gutterflow Pellet and sell the fillets

From the start

Fill a second tank from the Water Faucet and raise Gutter Tilapia. It ignores Organic Waste damage and keeps its Food fillets on the Gutterflow Pellet, so a Water Filter is not needed for this species. The Retired Aquafarmer sells only one unit of Gutter Tilapia Roe each Tuesday; protect a male and female from the first group to breed your own, while checking water and space.

  1. Fill the Jug of Water at the Water Faucet and pour it into the RAS Water Tank of the second Recirculating Aquaculture System until it holds 12000 ml. With Working Pipes, the Water Faucet works from day 1; without it, buy Water Trading and then Gutterflow On Tap.

    • One Jug of Water holds 6000 ml, so a tank takes two fills.
    • Water from the Water Faucet is Gutterflow until you own Rustwater On Tap, then Rustwater; Gutter Tilapia shows 'Unharmed by dirty water' and lives fine in either.
    • Once this tank holds water and fish, its Energy Cell starts draining, so set up its power the same way as the first tank.
  2. On Tuesday, buy Gutter Tilapia Roe and both bags of the Gutterflow Pellet from the Retired Aquafarmer and put them in the second tank.

    • Keep Tilapia out of this tank: it is harmed above 3% organic waste, and if more than 25% of its lifetime calories come from the Gutterflow Pellet, its fillets become 'Trash Grade'.
  3. Raise the 6 fry, and once they are Adults at 10 growth days, mark a male and a female with the Marking Pen; from then on they breed in the tank.

    • Check that the hatched group contains both a male and a female before choosing breeders.
    • A female at 50% fullness or more occasionally lays roe overnight, the same as Tilapia.
  4. Harvest as for Tilapia. Gutter Tilapia reaches the Elder stage at 16 growth days, with a target weight of 600 g. Check actual weight, mark breeders and set the Auto Butcher harvesting range for the fish you want to take.

    • From 33 growth days it is old, and old fish often die each growth day.
  5. Sell the fillets to the same buyers as the first tank: the Display Case buyers and the Security Requisition Officer. The cuts are the same types: Large Fish Fillet, Fish Fillet, Small Fish Fillet and Tiny Fish Fillet.

  6. If the Gutterflow Pellet runs out before Tuesday, put Fish Scrap or other uncanned food in the tank, or put it in the Livestock Feed Dispenser and press 'Blend'.

    • Below 37.5% fullness a fish stops growing, and two nights in a row with an empty stomach kill it.

Tips

Raise Graft Tilapia for Medical buyers

From mid game

Once you can maintain clean water in a separate tank, raise Graft Tilapia. Harvest the Tilapia Skin Graft worth 24 each and sell spare unfertilized Graft Tilapia Roe worth 60 each to Medical buyers. Fillets still sell as Food, so this branch can use a second Display Case category.

  1. Prepare a separate Recirculating Aquaculture System with water, power and a working Water Filter. On Tuesday buy one unit of fertilized Graft Tilapia Roe from the Retired Aquafarmer, then hatch its six fry.

    • Graft Tilapia loses health above 1.5% Organic Waste and dies at 4%, so check water with the AquaScan and replace worn filters. Ordinary Tilapia tolerates more waste.
  2. Feed Industrial Fish Feed or meat, and protect a breeding male and female with the Marking Pen. Adults need 750 ml each, elders 1000 ml; leave grid space for their offspring.

    • If more than 25% of a fish's lifetime calories come from the Gutterflow Pellet, its fillets and roe jars become Trash Grade, but its skin does not. Use clean feed if you want to sell both fillets and roe.
  3. Keep eggs needed for breeding in the tank. Remove spare Graft Tilapia Roe before fertilization to sell them as Food or Medical goods for a base value of 60 each.

    • An adult female with at least 50% on the Hunger gauge occasionally lays one egg overnight. Fertilized eggs lose their Food and Medical uses; sold eggs cannot become replacement fish.
  4. Harvest surplus Graft Tilapia with the Kitchen Knife, leaving breeders alive. Each full 200 g of actual body weight gives one Tilapia Skin Graft, in addition to fillets; a 600 g fish gives three skins with a base value of 24 each.

    • The Elder stage starts at 13 growth days, with 600 g as a target rather than a guaranteed weight. Check the fish before choosing a harvest.
  5. Display the Tilapia Skin Graft and spare unfertilized roe as Medical goods. With Showcase Expansion I, Food and Medical can both draw a buyer when both categories are selected. The Security Requisition Officer buys both on Thursdays from day 11 if Security reputation is at least 0.

    • When Medical is selected, a medium or high total, or store attractiveness of at least 400, draws the Mid-Level Nurse. From day 14, a high Medical total draws the Upper Level Hospital Supplier instead. The normal Display Case gates still apply.

Tips

  • Build this branch after the first tanks have stable water and power. It adds a Medical outlet, but the fish need cleaner water than ordinary Tilapia; keep checking filters as stock grows.

Raise Eel and Sturgeon for Eel Fillet and Caviar

Late game

With Aquaculture II, the Retired Aquafarmer brings 3 big fish every Tuesday; raise them on meat in their own tank and sell an Eel Fillet and Caviar. They never breed, so after the starting gift you buy more fish each time, and the meat to feed them comes from your Tilapia tanks.

  1. Before buying Aquaculture II, buy the Recirculating Aquaculture System, the Livestock Feed Dispenser and the Auto Butcher you need from the Retired Aquafarmer: afterwards each is only sometimes in stock. Fill the tank with enough water, fit a working Water Filter, and prepare a charged Energy Cell or a Current Converter with its nightly service active before the fish arrive. Stock at Dr. Jackson does not change with this upgrade.

  2. Buying it gives you a male and a female Eel at the Juvenile stage; they arrive outside a tank, so put them in one that day. From then on, every Tuesday the Retired Aquafarmer brings 3 big fish, each one of Eel, Electric Eel or Sturgeon: the Eel and the Electric Eel come at the Juvenile stage, and the Sturgeon comes as a female at the Adolescent stage.

    • None of them breed, so a male and a female give you nothing extra: every fish you sell is one you bought or received.
  3. Give them their own Recirculating Aquaculture System with the Livestock Feed Dispenser, put meat into the dispenser and press 'Blend': use Fish Scrap and small fillets from your Tilapia.

  4. A living Electric Eel that is not starving charges the battery in its Recirculating Aquaculture System and the batteries and rechargeable machines next to that Recirculating Aquaculture System every night, even in a blackout: 1 as a Juvenile, 2 as an Adolescent and 3 as an Adult or Elder.

    • Keep an Energy Cell in that tank's battery slot: an Adult covers a power use of 3 on its own.
  5. Sturgeon: from the Adult stage (18 growth days) it stores eggs while its health is 90% or more, gaining 40 g per growth day up to 15% of its stage weight. Butchering it turns all the eggs into Caviar, one jar per 100 g.

    • With at least 100 g of eggs stored, use the Surgery Toolset on a live Sturgeon to take eggs without killing it; the tool is not consumed. A full egg load costs 20% of maximum health and a smaller load costs more, and the fish must have more health than that cost before you can use the tool.
    • Live harvests give Caviar for the first 10 jars of its life, then every other jar for the next 6, and after that only Sturgeon Roe. From then on, butcher it when its eggs are full: butchering turns every egg into Caviar.
    • Below 90% health the eggs stop growing; in a powered tank with no water damage, a fish at 50% fullness or more recovers 10% of its maximum health each night.
    • The Auto Butcher leaves marked Sturgeon alive. When you decide to harvest one, use the Kitchen Knife by hand.
  6. Sell the Eel Fillet, the Small Eel Fillet, Caviar, and the Large Fish Fillet and the Fish Fillet from Sturgeon to Display Case Food buyers and the Security Requisition Officer. From day 14, the Upper Level Private Chef is the Display Case buyer when Food is selected and its total value is high.

Tips

  • The starting grid of the Recirculating Aquaculture System is 8 wide by 4 high and fits only 2× Sturgeon (each 7 wide by 2 high). Each Metal Ingot adds a row, up to 4: adding 2 rows fits 3 fish horizontally, and adding 3 rows fits 4 if you rotate them vertically. Those 4 Adults need exactly the tank's 12000 ml (3000 ml each). Each row adds 3 power use.
  • Water per Adult: Eel and Electric Eel 1200 ml, Sturgeon 3000 ml; as Elders, 2000 ml and 4000 ml.
  • Old age starts at 36 growth days for Eel and Electric Eel and at 80 for Sturgeon; old fish often die each growth day.

Recommended starting perks

Total: 3 Points

Working Pipes makes the Water Faucet usable on day 1, so you can fill the second Recirculating Aquaculture System without buying Water Trading and Gutterflow On Tap. Savings adds 150 starting credits for the first Tuesday supplies. Short Sleeper prevents the normal customer loss after a visit to Dr. Jackson. Unlucky returns 1 point but worsens scavenging, box contents and lottery odds.

Recommended Wild's Network upgrades

Early game

  1. Makes the Power Service free and keeps your store out of blackouts, so the Current Converter and the PowerBloc power the tanks every night (the Current Converter still charges its own fee). A night without power costs every fish 34% of its maximum health.

  2. Without Working Pipes, it comes before Gutterflow On Tap. Its kit includes a Water Filter, and the Retired Water Merchant starts coming on Wednesdays and also sells a Water Filter.

  3. Gives unlimited water from the Water Faucet, so you can fill the second Recirculating Aquaculture System and every one you add later. Working Pipes gives it from the start.

  4. Rent GraceRatingA

Not owned at the start on Thin Margins or Red Ink. Once, failing to pay rent does not end the run: the days until rent restart and the unpaid amount carries over, which protects the cash-poor first weeks.

Mid game

  1. Adds 150 base store attractiveness, bringing it to 400. At an actual attractiveness of 400 or more, Food selected in the Display Case can draw the Expedition Supplier even at a low total, and customers gain 10% of their original budget.

  2. Water from the Water Faucet becomes Rustwater instead of Gutterflow: purer, so less organic waste goes into the Tilapia tanks. Working Pipes gives it from the start.

  3. The PowerBloc gives 4 charge a night instead of 2, enough on its own for a Recirculating Aquaculture System whose power use is 3.

  5. Adds another 150 base Store Attractiveness, reaching 550. At a current Store Attractiveness of 450 or more, customers have at least 25% more Credits to spend.

Late game

  1. Dr. Jackson's night shop stocks one more Current Converter per visit (Jackson Investment II adds another), so you can power more tanks at once.

  2. Starts the big fish route: a male and a female Eel at the Juvenile stage arrive at once, and 3 big fish are for sale every Tuesday. Buy extra equipment from the Retired Aquafarmer first, because after that each item is only sometimes in stock there.

  3. Expands the Display Case, so you can display more fillets to draw bigger-budget buyers. Its extra visitor slot does not add a buyer if you display only fillets of the same major type.

How to raise reputation

Values are before adjustments. Gains are multiplied by 1.5 on Price Gouge, 1 on Mark Up, 0.75 on Thin Margins and 0.5 on Red Ink; losses by 0.5, 1, 1.25 and 2.

Security

  • Trading with Security customers adds about 2.5 for every 1000 credits sold or bought, and trades with the Security Requisition Officer count double.
  • A clean inspection adds 3.
  • Correctly reporting a wanted customer adds 5, or 1.5 times as much with Model Citizen.
  • Reporting a seller of stolen goods or serious contraband who is not wanted adds 0 to 4, depending on the contraband level, but lowers the seller's faction.
  • Correctly shooting an augmented person adds 8. A wrong shot costs 15.
  • An Alarm System with a transmitter for Security adds 1 on each night the Insurance Service is checked.
  • Completing a Security request from Marketplace Requests adds up to 10.
  • Model Citizen starts you 30 higher and Well Connected 15 higher, without difficulty adjustments.

Main causes of loss

It drops by up to 25 when an inspection finds contraband or stolen goods, and by 10 when you pay a fine.

Lower Levels

  • Trading with Lower Levels customers adds about 1.65 for every 1000 credits. Most normal customers belong to this faction, so everyday sales raise it.
  • Completing a Lower Levels request from Marketplace Requests adds up to 10, and the larger requests give 6 to 10.
  • Handing out free medicine you were given without charging adds 1 per item, and selling it costs 4.
  • Reporting The Butcher adds 6 instead of lowering it.
  • Well Connected starts you 15 higher.

Main causes of loss

Reporting its members costs 6 or more, and a failed haggle that makes the customer leave costs 3.

Upper Levels

  • Trading with Upper Levels customers adds about 3 for every 1000 credits.
  • An active Alarm System with a transmitter for the Upper Levels adds 1 on each night the Insurance Service is checked.
  • Completing an Upper Levels request from Marketplace Requests adds up to 5.
  • Sycophant starts you 15 higher and increases gains by 25%; Well Connected starts you 15 higher. These starting increases receive no difficulty adjustments.

Main causes of loss

Reporting this faction's customers usually costs 6 or more, and a failed haggle that makes the customer leave costs 3.
